Turks Run On Gas

A candidate I interviewed last week used an expression which I loved: “gaz vermek”. It’s Turkish slang which in English means “giving gas”. As in many other languages, it means motivating someone to overachieve by using the right words of encouragement. This is one of the common denominators among southern cultures like Turkey. The only northern country where this works to a great extent is the US. Patriotic speeches always work in these cultures.
